Hitler's Hit Parade
An eclectic, complex compilation of archive footage is presented in HITLER'S HIT PARADE: feature film excerpts, vaudeville acts, patronising instruction films, animations for children, commercials, newsreels in which Hitler tries to gain popularity by shaking small children’s hands, and shocking images of the battlefield and concentration camps. All footage comes from Germany during, or shortly before, World War II. The soundtrack includes songs like ‘Liebling, was wird nun aus uns beiden?’, ‘Das wird ein Frühling ohne Ende’ and ‘Ich weiss, es wird einmal ein Wunder gescheh’n’. Progressively, the images become increasingly gruesome. The filmmakers call their film ‘a composition in image and sound’, aiming to provide insight into the Aryan aesthetics and Nazi politics of the Third Reich without maintaining the usual distance. The editorial contrasts provoke thought and pose questions, without being pedantic.
