Floating with Spirits
This cinematic virtual reality experience transports you to the mountains of Oaxaca in Mexico. There we meet Jocelynne and Jaquelyne, two young Mazatecs. The Mazatec people have been living in this region for centuries, closely connected with the gigantic ceiba trees and gushing rivers, and the community’s memories reside in the nature that surrounds them.
While they prepare for the traditional DĂa de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Jocelynne and Jaquelyne share the stories that were passed down to them by their grandmother, a shaman who upheld the community’s mystical values.
The Day of the Dead is devoted to the spirits of deceased loved ones who return to the world of the living on that day. As soon as this VR documentary starts, we are transported by Jocelynne and Jaquelyne’s imagination into the world of the ancestors, where four nature spirits welcome us and share ancient Mazatec knowledge.
Floating with Spirits is co-presented by IDFA and Flemish Cultural Center De Brakke Grond.
