Home-coming in Granddaughter
Xiao was born in the Chinese city of Chengdu, but as a young woman she escorted her husband to his place of residence, a village near Lugu Lake in Northwest China. The journey to the spectacular mountainous region took two months. In the village, Xiao found a community with standards and values that were completely alien to her. The social structure in the village, which was headed by her husband, was matriarchal. Children were unconditionally left to the influence of the women and the men enjoyed a great sexual freedom outside marriage. However, Xiao adapted herself to the system and lived for 53 years in the isolated area, where all political revolutions passed by almost entirely unnoticed. In 1996, the elder lady pays a visit to her native city. After all those years, a lot has changed, but Xiao is so enthusiastic that she wants to send her 18-year-old granddaughter to live and study in Chengdu.
