Verhalen van een rivier
At the point where the Mulde river branches off to the south from the Elbe is the city of Dessau, in the east of Germany. Before the 'Wende', Dessau was located in the GDR and everything was different. No one escapes history. A number of inhabitants talk about the things that have changed for them. Not in the political sense, but with respect to the everyday, individual details. Hans used to be a party economist, now he is a nurse. Renate was working below her level in a factory, and although she is now having a more interesting job she misses her colleagues and the feeling of mutual solidarity. Angelika has moved up from being a simple employee to a successful manager in a brand-new office building in Bauhaus-style. Thomas used to be a soldier and has now lost track. The elderly Herr Weise - he has gone through more revolutions - zigzags past all obstacles. For filmmaker Petra Lataster-Czich, living in the Netherlands, it is also a personal scrutiny: she was born in Dessau in 1954. Her film was awarded the Golden Calf for best long documentary at the Dutch Film Festival earlier this year.
