Founded in the late 1960s by Stan Karter, Jerry Temaner, and Gordon Quinn in Chicago, it began as a collective of filmmakers with a shared vision: creating vérité films that amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

Today, Kartemquin stands as the longest-running independent documentary production house in the U.S. With iconic titles like Hoop Dreams (1993) and The Interrupters (2011), the studio remains committed to its mission: to confront, challenge, and inspire action by offering profound insight into society.
