Starting in January 2025, Isabel Arrate Fernandez will step down from her role as Executive Director of the IDFA Bertha Fund. She will continue as IDFA’s Deputy Artistic Director, overseeing strategic Filmmaker Support activities. Additionally, she will dedicate part of her time to other endeavors outside the organization.
Since 2002, Arrate Fernandez has played a crucial role in shaping the IBF into the exceptional fund it is today. She developed its grant schemes, initiated non-financial support activities, and cultivated a global network of filmmakers and film organizations. Under her leadership, the fund has supported numerous filmmakers in regions lacking active film funding structures, enabling them to realize ambitious projects.
“Isabel’s vision, dedication, and personal approach have positioned IBF as an organically decolonial beacon within the documentary filmmaking community. Her efforts have empowered filmmakers to tackle complex projects despite unfair economic and political landscapes,” said Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia. “Isabel will continue to contribute strategically to IDFA and IBF’s future, while we seek a new colleague to steer a fresh vision. We look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead and trust that the future is full of beautiful surprises.”
The IDFA Bertha Fund promotes the production and distribution of creative documentary films from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin-America and the Carribean, and Oceania. By offering financial support and professional guidance, the fund aims to foster a more equitable film landscape, amplify critical voices, and provide richer global perspectives.
As Arrate Fernandez prepares for this transition, IDFA remains steadfast in pursuing the IBF’s mission and goals. The search is now open for a new Executive Director of the IDFA Bertha Fund. Candidates with a passion for documentary film, experience in the film or cultural sector, and a commitment to the fund’s objectives are encouraged to apply.
