Festival
Each year, for 12 days in November, Amsterdam celebrates the flourishing documentary artform in all its diversity with more than 3,000 professionals and a wide audience that accounts for almost 300,000 festival visits.
Over its 36-year history to date, the festival has built up a rock-solid program profile. IDFA assesses more than 3,500 documentaries each year, of which some 300 productions make the final festival selection. Approximately one third of these are international or world premières. For IDFA, the creative documentary is always the starting point, with films and projects that show reality in an artistic way, and express the maker’s vision. In addition, the festival presents a broad selection of genres and strives for gender equality and a spread of countries of production. The films are presented in three umbrella sections: competition programs with premières, the international yearly harvest and the Focus Programs.
