Capital was onderdeel van het IDFA programma in 2023, en werd teruggetrokken door de filmmaker. Op verzoek van de filmmaker publiceren we de volgende tekst:
"This film was one of 12 to withdraw from participation at IDFA 2023, amongst 28 total withdrawals that included moderators, jury, and others in protest at the festival's damaging denunciation of an action in solidarity with Palestine that took place on the opening night of the festival. At the time, the festival erased all information relating to the films withdrawn in protest from the website. In response to the publication of the Palestine Film Institute's 'Industry Protocol in Times of Genocide' in August 2024, and as a gesture towards transparency, IDFA reinstated the information relating to the withdrawn films in September 2024. Film Synopsis
De Palestijnse kunstenaar-filmmaker Basma al-Sharif maakt experimentele films en installaties waarin ze cyclische politieke gebeurtenissen en conflicten onderzoekt. In Capital, haar nieuwste werk, slaat ze een iets andere richting in.
In een combinatie van fictie en futuristisch design refereert de film uitbundig aan het Italiaanse genre ‘witte telefoon’ (Telefoni Bianchi), een type films uit de jaren dertig en veertig, vernoemd naar wat destijds een statussymbool was. Deze escapistische, glamoureuze films droegen conservatieve waarden uit en speelden zich vaak af in een welvarend (soms niet-bestaand) buitenland – ver weg van de armoede van het werkelijke Italië in die tijd. Later werd het genre beschouwd als een voorloper van fascistische propagandafilms.
Het is niet de enige referentie in deze eigenzinnige, satirische korte film, die behalve naar het fascisme vooral verwijst naar de verwoede bouwplannen voor luxe wooncomplexen, waarmee rijke enclaves worden geschapen in arme landen als Egypte. Omdat Alsharif het niet veilig acht haar kritiek rechtstreeks te leveren, voert ze onder meer een buikspreker, liedjes en fictieve reclames op.
