For eight months of the year, 40,000 families live in a desert in India to extract salt from the burning earth. Their only reward is increasing debt, and the salt they harvest lies uncollected at railway sidings, to be washed back into the desert when the monsoon arrives. But nothing will stop them from coming back the following year to start the cycle again.
