The Bittersweet Shadow of Stampersgat

In the Dutch village Stampersgat the big sugar factory may have to close because of European rules to stop subvention for the sugar industry. How does this change the life of the villagers, first and foremost those of the directors father, mother and nephew, who all worked for the factory? Is the fact that his parents marriage is crumbling due to the unavoidable changes coming from far?
