Jeanne Wikler has succeeded in making a picture of the practically unrecorded history of women on the Antilles, with the co-operation of many Antillean women. In the eyes of an outsider the Antillean woman radiates power, energy, spirit of enterprise and independence. Her seemingly great freedom and independence is limited, however, by her daily struggle to preserve these values as well as she can, in a culture that is so machismo dominated.
By portraying women and women's organizations Wikler searches for the basis of this trial of strength, from the period of the Dutch colonial occupation to the present. She found a matriarchy without power. In part 1, , she throws light upon women predominantly from Curacao; in part 2, , upon women from Sint Maarten.
