Synti - Dokumentti jokapäiräisistä...
SYNTI ? DOKUMENTTI JOKAPÄIRÄISISTÄ RIKOKASISTA is a wry film about themes like sense of guilt, sin and the role that morality plays in choices that people make every day. By setting day-to-day events against the background of the seven mortal sins ? pride, wrath, jealousy, lechery, stinginess, idleness and gluttony ? the absolute character that morality has for many people is stressed. The film takes us to the twilight zone that lies beyond the reach of legal and moral laws. It is precisely there that our deeds and words reflect the true nature of our standards and values. In that everyday environment, at school, at home or at work, a number of people 'confesses' to misdemeanours they have committed or they tell about wrongs they have suffered through other people's hands. These are static, almost surreal portraits, in which the speaker is surrounded by the people he is referring to. In SYNTI ? DOKUMENTTI JOKAPÄIRÄISISTÄ RIKOKASISTA Susanna Helke and Virpi Suutari employ the same method that they used in earlier films about 'commonplace' subjects like aggression against women and 'heroes'. Instead of creating traditional interview situations, their protagonists speak straight into the camera. Via trivialities and in a spiral movement they finally arrive at the earnestness of their subject. Yet they are not interested in stressing the universal character of their themes, but only in writing a history of the commonplace.
