R.E.U. – A MERCILESS JOURNEY INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION is not only a physical trip to different countries, but also a hallucinatory personal quest for the essence of the European Union. Filmmaker Nick Fraser loses himself in the Brussels labyrinth with its endless succession of commissions and institutes. He gets lost in the corridors of one EU office building after another. He meets frustrated farmers in Poland and dolled-up orphans in Rumania. In the process, the spectator is constantly close on his heels, because Fraser puts himself this time not behind, but in front of the camera. Having an English father and French mother, Fraser sees himself as a true European, so in Brussels he is desperately looking for something to believe in. Behind the bureaucracy, he finds civil servants with a human face and an unbroken faith in the necessity of their work. Yet his personal feelings about the European Union are increasingly unsettled.
