O Velho, a história de Luiz Carlos...
With the end of the Cold War and the military dictatorship in Brazil, nothing stood in the way of making the first biography of one of the most severely persecuted figures in Latin America this century. For more than thirty-five years, Luiz Carlos Prestes (1898-1990) was the controversial leader of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB). This biographical portrait covers seventy years of Brazilian history, including ‘the long march’ that was led by rebellious lieutenants in the twenties, Prestes‘ dramatic romance with the German Jewess Olga Benário during the disastrous communist revolution of 1935, the military coup d‘état, and the armed uprising and political repression between 1964 and 1974. Statements by journalists, family members, former PCB activists and historians are alternated with rare historical archive footage.
